SOHO Routers

In this assignment, we were to view the Understanding SOHO routers tutorial. The video introduced us to Small Office Home Office (SOHO) routers discussing different types of routers and characteristics, including a routers internal and external IP addresses. Below are the assignment questions that we had to answer.

Eli the Computer Guy's Understanding SOHO Routers

  1. What differentiates a SOHO router from an Enterprise Model?

SOHO routers are typically used for a LAN's within small businesses and can be configured by the average user, whereas an enterprise routers are more expensive and must be managed by network professionals.

  2. When dealing with an ISP, why might you want a static IP address?

The static IP address will not change which is good for web servers, email servers, etc. and a static IP address would guarantee you remain connected.

  3. What functions (services) are normally found in a SOHO router?

Functions that are normally found in a SOHO router include DNS, DHCP, Port forwarding, Firewall.

  4. What does a firewall do?

Firewalls accept or deny traffic into or out of a network through rules and configuration and can block certain ports to secure the network from potential threats.

  5. With a SOHO router, why might redundancy be desirable?

Redundancy may be desirable for the internet connection in case one of the ISP fails. In case an Internet connection does go down, the connection can continue.

  6. What is a DMZ? Why would an enterprise want one?

Demilitarized Zone is an area in a network that is insecure and often open to public areas for network access. An enterprise would want one to be able to better protect important assets or information from being available on the same network as customers or public areas.

  7. In a small office, what would be the disadvantage of using enterprise level routers?

The cost of using a enterprise router would be much higher than if they used a SOHO router. In addition, the configuration and maintenance would be much harder for the average small business.
