PNet Segmentation
In this assignment, we were to watch a video on Physical network Segmentation. With this video, we learned about how a network can be physically divided and it includes discussions of demarcation and customer premise equipment. Below are the questions that we had to answer for this assignment.
Eli the Computer Guy's Physical Network Segmentation- What is a demarc point?
A point in or on a building/structure where responsibility or authority of the network connection is transferred from an ISP/TeleComm provider to the organization. - What is the significance of a demark point?
It marks the place that is responsible for the internet connection. - What is a Main Distribution Frame?
The Main Distribution Frame is the demarc point between a business and the property manager and it is where the cabling comes together to create the network for a business. - What is an Intermediate Distribution Frame?
An Intermediate Distribution Frame is connected to the MDF and usually sits on different floors or a certain distance away to reduce the amount of cable needed to connect to the network. - Why use an IDF?
To minimize the amount of cabling that must be run back to the MDF - In a conventional small network, where would you expect to find the MDF?
in the server room. - If you had a network that covered five floors in a building, how many IDF(s) and MDF(s) would
you expect to have?
In a network spanning five floors, someone would have one MDF and four IDFs. - What purpose does an IDF serve?
IDF facilitates the cabling of many computer systems in one area directly to an MDF.
