In this assignment, we were to watch several online tutorials by Eli the Computer Guy. During his tutorial, he emphasizes on network cabling's practical aspects and introduces us to the different types of computer netwroking hardware. Below are the assignment questions that we had to answer.

Introduction to Network Cabling Questions

  1. What is TIA/EIA 568?

    The first standard to create structured cabling. The standard defined the minimum requirements for internal communications wiring within buildings and between buildings on one campus.


  2. What is the difference between TIA 568A and TIA 568B.

    TIA 568A was the standard defined the minimum requirements for internal communications wiring within buildings and between buildings on one campus. TI568B is an updated standard that has 6 subsystems: Building entrance; Equipment Room; Telecommunications closet; Backbone cabling; Horizontal Cabling; and Work Area. This standard describes what the master cabling document should look like and applies to both twisted and fiber-optic cabling.

    A patch panel is used to manage incoming and outgoing LAN cables

  1. What is an Ethernet straight through cable?

    A straight through cable, or patch cable, are used to connect devices directly to an Ethernet device. Commonly used to connect work stations to network devices


  2. What is the difference between a MDI and a MDIX interface?

    MDI is the component that provides the physical and electrical connection to the cabling and MDIX allows for connections between two devices.


  3. What is an Ethernet crossover cable?

    An Ethernet crossover cable is used to connect computing devices. A crossover cable could be used to connect two computers to one another.


  4. If you were going to connect two CSU/DSUs, what type of cable would you use?

    T1 Crossover


Plenum and Non-Plenum Questions

  1. What is the disadvantage of using regular TWP copper cable in a ceiling plenum?

    Regular TWP copper cable is not fire resistant and could lead to release of toxic fumes into the plenum air space of the building


Converting Media Questions

  1. Why do you always need to provide power to the device when you convert from fiber to copper?

    Copper Signals are electrical and there is no way for the light from the fiber to be converted into electrical signals without the use of a power source.


  2. Can a network signal from almost any type of media be converted to any other type of media?
